The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in our body. That mobility also comes at a cost, with it being the most injured joint at times. The purpose of the shoulder muscles (rotator cuff) is to keep the ball of the arm bone, rested within the socket. An inefficient group of shoulder muscles can cause asymmetry of the ball to sit nicely within the socket. It gets more complex as also your mid back (thoracic spine), collar bone (clavicle), shoulder blade (scapula) and even your opposite buttock muscle (glutes) can effect shoulder function.
